Getting There:
By air:
Tokyo has two international airports – Narita Airport and Haneda Airport. Nearly all international flights land at Narita (also known as New Tokyo International Airport). All domestic flights go to Haneda, which is closer to the city centre. International flights with China Airlines use this airport also.
The best way to get from the airport into the city centre is by train.
By train:
Tokyo’s premier train station is Tokyo Station which is near the Imperial Palace and this is where all the major Japanese Railways (JR) trains arrive. Two other stations which are widely used in the city are Marunouchi and Chiyoda-ku.
By bus:
There are many bus stations throughout Tokyo. The main one of all these is one beside Tokyo Station.
By boat:
Boats travel to Tokyo from Kita-Kyushu in Kyushu, Kochi and Tokushina on Shikoku, and Naha on Okinwa-Honto. They can work out cheaper than trains or buses. But the best thing about getting here by boat is that you won’t forget it for a very long time.
Getting Around:
By train:
There are two types of train service in Tokyo –over ground and underground.
The most useful train line above ground is the JR-run Yamanote train line which loops the city. Taking a train around the whole city is a great way to see Tokyo when you first arrive. All major suburbs have stations.
A grand total of 12 underground lines operate throughout Tokyo which are run by two different companies. Lines are distinguished using colours. It is a very efficient service and you will find maps to help you get around at the train stations.
By bus:
Buses are of little or no use to travellers as the vast majority of signs at bus stops are written in English. Both train services are so efficient that you probably won’t have to use buses.
Other means of transport:
One tram line is still in operation in Tokyo between Waseda and Minowa. Ferries are also still used in some parts of the city.
